In this article By Peter White, ABC NewsAustraliaIn the years since the devastating Christmas Eve plane crash, the number of deaths from car accidents and the number suffering serious injuries has increased, with the number and severity of the injuries also increasing.

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show the number 1 cause of death is car accidents, followed by road traffic accidents and falls from the highest cause of injury to falls from a fall from a height.

It shows more than 3.6 million people died in road traffic crashes in 2015-16.

More than half (54 per cent) of all the deaths in Australia were due to a fall, the latest figures show.

And a third (33 per cent), or 990,000 people, died from a crash or other incident that resulted in injuries.

The number of people killed or injured in the car accidents increased from a peak of 11,835 in 2014-15 to a low of 8,862 in 2015, with more than 1,300 people killed and more than 700 injured.
