A New York bartender who said he was the victim of homophobic slurs during a live stream in 2020 federal holidays is apologizing for the outburst.

The New York State Bar Association’s Executive Director David J. Hwang said Wednesday he was deeply offended by the comments.

Hwang, who was also a bartender at the bar on the night of the livestream, apologized to patrons who were not in attendance.

“I’m very sorry that my behavior offended anyone,” he said.

“I was not aware that my remarks were going to have a negative impact on the lives of anyone.”

Hwang was referring to the comments he made about a male bartender who was making drinks in a restroom at the venue.

The bar manager, who is male, said in the video that Hwang used the N-word.

The bartender who spoke on the video, who asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation, said the incident was caught on a live feed and that he was “shocked” by Hwang’s behavior.

Hanging his head, the bartender said, “I’m going to go to the police, because this is just so stupid.”

Hanging up the phone, Hwang repeated: “This is totally inappropriate.

I was offended.

I’ll be back.

I’m sorry.”
