Posted July 25, 2020 15:37:50Chinese holiday resorts have reopened in Shanghai after a long winter break.

A day after it shut its doors for the last time, Chinese tourist attractions including Shanghai Disneyland reopened to tourists on July 20.

According to Chinese government data, holiday resorts hosted 5.6 million visitors during the first half of this year, up 10% on last year.

Tourism generated a record 6.5 trillion yuan ($892 billion) for the country in 2020, up 17% on the previous year, according to the Chinese government.

More than 1.6 billion tourists visited China in the first six months of 2021, up 2.2% on 2020, according the Chinese Tourism Administration.

Last year, China closed the last of its 70,000 “super resorts”, meaning it has turned the last stretch of land and sea into its permanent holiday zone, known as the “Jiaozhang resort” in Chinese.

But after an extensive reopening effort last year, the country now expects to open more than 1 million resorts in the next year.

The new resorts are set to open in 2021, with the last set to be in 2022, Xinhua reported on July 21.

It also reported that the number of new tourist arrivals will be up 10 percent this year compared to the previous two months.

A few months ago, the tourism ministry said the number had already increased by 1.3 million in July.

China has become the world’s most popular holiday destination, with some 40 million tourists a year visiting its resorts.

Tourist numbers in China have also risen sharply over the past year, driven by a surge in mainland visitors, according a recent study by the International Tourism Institute.

In the first quarter of 2020, tourists from the mainland visited more than one-third of all tourist attractions in China.

According to the institute, the number reached 8.7 million, the highest level since at least 2001.

The number of Chinese visitors to the US rose by 11.2 percent in the quarter, compared with the same period in 2020.

Tourists from the US also accounted for almost half of the 1.4 million Chinese visitors from Japan and Hong Kong in the same quarter.

The US remains the second-largest holiday destination for Chinese tourists after the US, with a combined annual annual tourist growth of almost 4 million.

The country has also been on a surge since its fall in the 1980s and 1990s, with tourism increasing by 50% in the decade to 2020, the ITI said.

Last week, Chinese officials said they would open two more Chinese cities, Chongqing and Nanjing, to foreign investment.
